💸 Can You Really Make Money Blogging? The Honest Truth for the Average Joe

We’ve all seen the headlines:
“This mom made $100K/month from her blog!”
“How I quit my job thanks to Substack!”

That’s great for them — but what about the rest of us?

I’ve been blogging for years. I have over 123 articles on ProfessionalGlobalEtiquette.com and more on AdrienneBarker.com. I’m not famous. I don’t have a million followers. But I do believe in blogging — not as a get-rich-quick scheme, but as a visibility, connection, and long-game strategy.

So let’s talk honestly about what blogging can really do for you — and where income actually comes from.

📊 What Are Real Bloggers Really Earning?

Let’s look at a few popular platforms:

💻 Medium

  • Most writers earn between $5–$50/month.

  • You get paid based on how long people read your stories.

  • The top 10% can make $500+/month, but it takes lots of views, consistent posting, and smart story packaging.

📬 Substack

  • A newsletter-first blog. Some people charge $5/month.

  • Most newsletters earn $0 unless heavily promoted.

  • Writers with loyal followings or niche authority can earn $1,000–$5,000+/month.

🌐 WordPress + Google AdSense

  • You can run ads on your blog.

  • Most people earn $2–$10 per 1,000 views.

  • You need 10,000+ pageviews/month to make more than lunch money.

💡 Reality check: Monetization is possible — but for most bloggers, it’s not thousands overnight. It’s a strategic add-on, not a quick payday.

💡 Other Ways to Monetize (Without Going Viral)

So, what does work for the average, committed blogger?

1. Use Your Blog as a Sales Funnel

✔️ Promote your services or programs
✔️ Share success stories or how-to tips
✔️ Guide readers to book a call or sign up

Example: I use blogs to support my podcast, visibility strategy, and coaching work. One blog post can lead someone to hire me — and that’s real ROI.

2. Repurpose Blogs into Sellable Content

  • Turn a series of posts into an eBook or workbook

  • Offer a free lead magnet and upsell a paid product

  • Create a mini course or download bundle

✍️ A post about etiquette tips could become a $19 digital PDF with worksheets, reflection prompts, and a branded checklist.

3. Partner with Brands

If you have a niche audience or B2B influence, brands may:

  • Sponsor a post

  • Send free products

  • Pay for visibility on your newsletter or podcast

You don’t need millions of views — just a clearly defined audience and professional approach.

🎙️ New from Me: Bloggers Unite on Chatter

I recently started a new space on ChatterSocial.io called Bloggers Unite. It’s a place where we:

  • 💬 Talk about real blog growth — not hype

  • 🔗 Share our articles for feedback and visibility

  • 💡 Brainstorm content ideas and monetization models

  • 📢 Discuss platforms like Medium, Substack, LinkedIn, and WordPress

You don’t have to go this alone. And you don’t have to be “famous” to succeed.

🧠 But What Should You Write About?

If you’re unsure what to write, here’s what’s worked for me:

  • A question someone asked in a meeting

  • A story I keep retelling

  • A client problem I helped solve

  • A trending topic I want to weigh in on

  • A lesson I’m still learning

Tip: Business conversations are full of blog inspiration — if you start listening like a content creator.

I keep a “Blog Sparks” list in my notes app, and any time I say, “That could be a blog,” it goes in.

🌱 Why Blogging Still Wins at SEO (Even in the Age of AI & Reels)

You’ve probably heard that blogging is “dead” — but that couldn’t be further from the truth when it comes to SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Blogs are still one of the most powerful tools to help your website show up on Google — especially when your content answers real questions, shares real stories, and solves real problems.

Here’s why:

  • 📈 Google loves fresh content — and every blog post counts as an update.

  • 🗝️ Blog posts help you rank for long-tail keywords (like “how non-famous bloggers can make money” or “repurposing blogs into products”).

  • 🔗 Blogs create internal linking opportunities, keeping visitors on your site longer.

  • 🧠 Written content builds authority, which leads to more backlinks, more traffic, and better visibility.

You don’t need to master SEO to benefit from it — you just need to blog with purpose.
